Meta plans sweeping layoffs - first wave in May - Reuters

Meta Platforms, which is behind several social networking services, plans to carry out a first major cut on May 20, affecting around 10 percent of the workforce, equivalent to nearly 8,000 employees. That is according to Reuters, citing sources.

More layoffs are expected during the second half of 2026, but details regarding scope and timing are not yet clear and may be adjusted depending on developments in artificial intelligence.

The company, which had about 79,000 employees at the turn of the year, is making the changes as part of a broad push for AI-driven efficiency and fewer management layers. Last year, Meta reported revenues of more than $200 billion and a profit of around $60 billion.

Similar measures are being seen across the sector, where Amazon recently cut about 30,000 office workers, nearly 10 percent of its office staff, citing efficiency gains from AI.
