Wall Street climbed on peace optimism in the Middle East

The New York Stock Exchange climbed on Friday after several reports that tensions in the Middle East had eased. Among other things, the news came that the important Strait of Hormuz could potentially be reopened.

On the broad market, the S&P 500 index rose 1.20 percent to 7 126.06. The S&P 500 index traded during the day within a range of as low as 0.47 percent and as high as 1.51 percent.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 1.52 percent to 24 468.48. During the day, the index moved within a range of as low as 0.76 percent and as high as 1.73 percent.

Sector-wise, consumer discretionary had the best performance, up 1.97 percent, while energy had the weakest performance, down 2.94 percent.

Streaming company Netflix's earnings per share in the first quarter came in just over 60 percent higher than analysts' expectations. Revenue was in line with consensus. Guidance for the second quarter was lower than expected. The company expects earnings of 0.78 dollars per share versus the expected 0.84 percent, with revenue of 12.57 billion dollars, versus the expected 12.64.

Netflix also announced that chairman of the board and co-founder Reed Hastings will leave the board in June after 29 years. He was the company's CEO until 2023 and plans to devote himself to, among other things, philanthropy going forward. The stock fell 9.7 percent.

Aluminum company Alcoa's adjusted earnings per share and revenue in the first quarter came in lower than analysts' expectations. The stock plunged 6.8 percent.

Electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar reported a clear improvement in earnings for the fourth quarter of 2025 compared with the same period the year before. Revenue increased sharply while the loss narrowed significantly. The stock fell 11.9 percent.

The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note fell 7 basis points to 4.24 percent. This morning, the yield is noted at 4.27 percent.

Brent oil fell 9.07 percent to 90.38 dollars and WTI oil fell 9.41 percent to 82.59 dollars. Brent is at 95.48 dollars today, while WTI is at 87.59 dollars.

The gold price (futures) rose 1.48 percent to 4 879.60 dollars. Today gold stands at 4 812.40 dollars.

The dollar strengthened to 1.1766 against the euro, from 1.1782 the day before. Today the dollar stands at 1.1757. One dollar costs 9.1767 kronor today, compared with 9.1648 the previous trading day.
