SKAGEN Vekst fell 5.39 percent in March – new positions in Easyjet, Elkem and Vestas

The SKAGEN Vekst B fund fell 5.39 percent in March. Since the turn of the year, the fund has fallen 2.02 percent. This is stated in a monthly report from portfolio managers Søren Milo Christensen and Sondre Solvoll Bakketun.

In the introduction, the managers write that the month was marked by weaker market sentiment. The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East drove up energy prices, which triggered a broad decline in the stock markets.

The main contributors to the fund’s return during the month were Shell, Yara and TGS. Yara benefited from supply disruptions for fertilizer, which led to price increases of 40 to 50 percent.

On the negative side were Samsung Electronics, Hana Financial Group and Boliden.

The mining company Boliden was weighed down by a production stoppage at the Garpenberg mine as a result of seismic activity. The fund took advantage of the price decline to buy back shares that had been sold earlier in the year.

“In our view, the market reaction essentially wiped out most of the mine’s value, which we consider excessive in a long-term perspective,” the managers write.

During the month, the fund established new positions in Easyjet, Elkem and Vestas. At the same time, the entire holdings in BASF as well as the IT companies Broadcom and Applied Materials were sold.

The managers believe that the market underestimates the probability of persistently higher inflation and interest rates, especially in the United States. The fund continues to favor undervalued companies in finance, industry and energy.

At month-end, the fund’s three largest equity holdings were Novo Nordisk, ISS and Ping An Insurance Group, with portfolio weights of 4.2, 3.7 and 3.5 percent, respectively.

Geographically, the fund was mainly exposed to Denmark, Sweden and South Korea, with weights of 18.3, 10.9 and 10.8 percent, respectively.
