Copperstone submits its environmental permit application for the Viscaria project to the Land and Environmental Court (“Mark- och Miljödomstolen”) at the district court of Umeå. The submission was completed in line with the company’s communicated timeline, which was to submit the application during March. The ~4,000 page document details Copperstone’s ambition to conduct responsible mining operations that minimises environmental impact. This is done, for example, through innovative water management and purification as well as recycling of minerals from the old tailings dam.
One milestone down, but what happens next?
The submission of the permit application is undoubtedly an important milestone for Copperstone in its pursuit of re-opening the Viscaria mine in Kiruna. Looking ahead, the company now expects to work closely with the Land and Environmental court to get the permit approved, which it has previously stated it expects to happen by mid-23. Following the permit approval, operations in Viscaria and construction of the processing plant can begin.
